[4:02 PM, 8/25/2018] TecKXpert Working Committee: Good Evening.
Why the life of battery is restricted to only three years ? Where control batteries do last long and we don’t change as frequent as the UPS batteries why ??

[4:02 PM, 8/25/2018] TecKXpert Working Committee: Battery life is dependent on many factors like ambient temp, number of cycles, power quality, storage..

[4:02 PM, 8/25/2018] TecKXpert Working Committee: Under ideal conditions it may run 5 years but in India it is recommended to replace it in 3 yrs..

[4:03 PM, 8/25/2018] TecKXpert Working Committee: Some IT companies have gone in for better makes like C&D as compared to Panasonic, Rocket which have extended life of 5 yrs to 7 yrs. With periodic IR Test the condition monitoring helps greatly.

[4:06 PM, 8/25/2018] +91 95001 46644: What is the life time for the UPS capacitors ? OEM always push for early change over DC & AC?

[4:06 PM, 8/25/2018] +91 95001 46644: What is the life time for the UPS capacitors ? OEM always push for early change over DC & AC?

[4:06 PM, 8/25/2018] Suresh Texepert: Due to buildup of gas inside. Gas will generate electromechanical oxidation of the electrode

[4:22 PM, 8/25/2018] TecKXpert Working Committee: Generally 5 yrs

[4:23 PM, 8/25/2018] TecKXpert Working Committee: It depends on site condition/load

[4:30 PM, 8/25/2018] TecKXpert Working Committee: The more is the floating capacity, the lesser is the life expectancy!

[4:30 PM, 8/25/2018] TecKXpert Working Committee: Ensure proper gap / ventilation is provided next to the batteries! Explosions do occur when this space is limited!

[4:30 PM, 8/25/2018] TecKXpert Working Committee: Ventilation to battery room is important as the batteries do breath explosive gases no matter what ever is the sealed type of batt it is!

[4:31 PM, 8/25/2018] TecKXpert Working Committee: At installation a battery is at 100 percent of its rated capacity, however each discharge and subsequent recharge will slightly decrease the relative capacity of a battery. The length of the discharge cycle will determine by how much a battery’s capacity is reduced. While cycling is a necessary part of UPS operation, being aware of the cycling frequency will help to predict the life of a UPS.

[4:35 PM, 8/25/2018] TecKXpert Working Committee: Few points in battery selection… always stick to the same Batch production to reduce manufacturing defects!

[4:35 PM, 8/25/2018] TecKXpert Working Committee: While choosing resiliency, ensure the gap is not too large from the design perspective to usage requirement.

[4:39 PM, 8/25/2018] +91 89396 97972: Rigtly said, more than all these things, for large batter Banks to be kept away from building or with a better isolated manner, this is for the best safety.

[4:40 PM, 8/25/2018] TecKXpert Working Committee: The main cause for bulging is battery overcharging although it can also happen due to shorting of the terminals of the battery. Both these situations results in heating up of the cell plates inside the battery. The lead of the cell plates has a high expansion rate when heated.

[4:42 PM, 8/25/2018] TecKXpert Working Committee: Battery impedance is a combination of internal resistance and reactance. Lower impedance shows the good health of the batteries and as it grows it reduces the capacity of the battery..

[4:56 PM, 8/25/2018] TecKXpert Working Committee: Why it is so called VRLA?
VRLA- Valve Regulated Lead Acid Batteries.
These batteries feature fiberglass mesh between the battery plates which serves to contain the electrolyte.

[4:58 PM, 8/25/2018] +91 98403 43314: Sorry for the delay in reply. STP 120 kld and ETP 27 kld

[5:05 PM, 8/25/2018] TecKXpert Working Committee: I have seen a battery rack of 200KVA UPS that was insulated with rubber sheet . Any explanation for this

[5:05 PM, 8/25/2018] TecKXpert Working Committee: To avoid the discharge of batteries

[6:00 PM, 8/25/2018] TecKXpert Working Committee: Hoppecke batteries are good… for 200 ah capacity of normal Battery…. with 132 ah of Hoppecke is equivalent & during load test it withstood with out any issue…we are using it & design life is 8 years..

[6:00 PM, 8/25/2018] TecKXpert Working Committee: Battery testing on load can be carried out at C10 or C20 rating that is a fully charged battery of 200 ah is subjected to a current of 10 or 20 amps for 20 hrs or 10 hrs. & the voltage is measured thus ensuring it’s not falling below 10.5 volts at the end time.

[6:00 PM, 8/25/2018] TecKXpert Working Committee: Batteries bulging & explosion in technical terms is called as thermal run away & one of the main reason for this to happen as per the battery experts are inter changing of the polarities with in the battery & it may happen either during charging or discharging with out our knowledge….

[6:00 PM, 8/25/2018] TecKXpert Working Committee: Now a days battery monitoring system is in place & by conductance method of knowing the health status of the batteries seems to be very practical…

[6:00 PM, 8/25/2018] TecKXpert Working Committee: To sum each battery is a character by itself & we are all having a hydrogen ticking bombs at our disposal….

[6:00 PM, 8/25/2018] TecKXpert Working Committee: By the way I always thought either conductance or impedance was just a statisticial methods

[6:00 PM, 8/25/2018] TecKXpert Working Committee: We don’t have any exact measurements to predict failures

[6:00 PM, 8/25/2018] TecKXpert Working Committee: Real time battery monitoring system/management is essential for critical data center supply. Buck and boost charging, internal resistance, cell voltage drops play a major role in battery failures… Leading to section of battery failure.

[6:10 PM, 8/25/2018] George Fernandes Acsendas Bangalore: Battery Monitoring for larger number of batteries can also be carried out using impedance measurement on a regular basis and monitor the trends. BMS sometime works out costly for implementation

[6:14 PM, 8/25/2018] +91 88612 00939: DC leakage current to earth from battery terminals is important. Such leakage could trip the UPS also. In large power houses DC earth leakage is well monitored where control, relay protection supply is DC supply through battery bank of 110V, 48V etc.,

[6:53 PM, 8/25/2018] +91 94457 67136: How to identify the weaker battery in the battery bank

[6:55 PM, 8/25/2018] George Fernandes Acsendas Bangalore: Only through regular monitoring and impedance checking

[6:56 PM, 8/25/2018] George Fernandes Acsendas Bangalore: You can check using Hioki Meter

[6:58 PM, 8/25/2018] George Fernandes Acsendas Bangalore: Check thermography of your battery too..if you find temperature difference then you may be able identify the faulty battery too

[7:01 PM, 8/25/2018] George Fernandes Acsendas Bangalore: Has anybody done charging and discharging of batteries before commissioning the batteries

[7:03 PM, 8/25/2018] +91 94457 67136: Weaker battery may indicate higher than rated voltage when its connected in series its true?

[8:29 PM, 8/25/2018] +91 91769 19669: Points to be noted before installation.
1. Check all individual batteries for any physical damage.
2. Ensure all the batteries are of same batch.
3. Ensure to handle one by one during unit shifting and place it slowly, to avoid internal damages.
4. Maintain gap between battery units to have free heat desolation during charging or discharging.

[8:29 PM, 8/25/2018] +91 91769 19669: Few best practices in handling batteries.
1. All terminals to be insulated with cover.
2.All battery stand to be rather.
3. Each battery bank to have its own isolator
4. All batteries to be placed on insulated sheets.
5. Battery bank room temperature to be maintained between 15 to 27 Dec
6. Periodical impedance measurement to be done and trend history to be maintained.
7. Battery to be installed in battery cabinets or in separate room. Not to be in common room along with UPS or panels.
8. Batteries to be handled with appropriate hand gloves. Even for measurement of voltage with multimeter.

[9:10 PM, 8/25/2018] George Fernandes Acsendas Bangalore: As on date still we speak only about warranty and Garentee of batteries with life cycle and no of premature failures and unexpected failures but non of us do not look about the quality of materials imposed to build a battery for longlasting life. Every battery built materials should be 100% complied to quality standards and same test proof should be available apart from this we may consider the general requirements of battery storage and operation process to quick analysis of failures. Please correct me all if I’m wrong somewhere it’s my opinion and thoughts in my views

[9:47 PM, 8/25/2018] +91 91766 34575: Yes indeed
